Autism Facts and Treatment

  • Intervention Services for Autism and Developmental Delay (ISADD) – A Perth, Western Australia  based organisation, offering home-based Applied Behaviour Analysis/Discrete Trial Training (ABA/DTT) intervention programs for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or other Developmental Delay.  
  • Bright Tots – This site provides information on signs of autism as well as information about other developmental disorders such as hyperlexia, ADD/ADHD, OCD, auditory processing and the list continues. It outlines treatment therapies based around diet and behavioural interventions as well as sensory integration and occupational therapy.
  • The Autism Research Institute (ARI) – A good site for providing research-based information to parents and professionals around the world. Information on the triggers of autism and on methods of diagnosing and treating autism.
  • Dr Libby Weaver – Dr Libby Weaver works with those interested in the biochemical status of children with ASD through diet and supplements. She is based in Auckland but speaks and works throughout New Zealand.
  • Autism Intervention Trust – this Wellington-based group organise ABA therapy, holiday programmes and other opportunities for children with autism in their region.

New Zealand Information Providers

  • Altogether Autism – Altogether Autism is the national disability information and advice service (DIAS) in autism spectrum disorders. This is funded under contract by the Ministry of Health.
  • Autism NZ – Autism New Zealand Inc. aims to provide support, resources and information on autism spectrum disorders to those with these conditions, their family/whanau, caregivers and professionals working with them.

Blogs and other forums

  • Humans.org.nz – this NZ forum features discussions, news, and personal stories from informed writers and people affected by autism.
  • YouTube group Posautive – there are over 1000 clips in this group, and there are many more on autism related topics on YouTube. Watching some movies can help people learn a lot about autism and treatment. Visitors should be aware that you can sometimes encounter cruel and insensitive types of comments on these kinds of forums.
  • AutismDiva – the anonymous, California-based diva has been blogging about autism for several years. You can get a taste for autism blogs in a visual environment that isn’t too cluttered. The posts are pretty long but well-informed and thoughtful. Her approach is positive and progressive, and she is often critical of how autism is portrayed in the mass media.
